How raw is too raw?

I'm resurrecting this blog - as a gay man writing m/m erotic stories I'm at a loss to explain why having my work called "raw" is bad. I prefer the following reviews: (Please excuse the different fonts, I'm not as technologically advanced as I should be.)

Your views on the level of "rawness" you prefer would be appreciated. Kenn

  • Seriously Reviewed: Skateboarders

"Yowza. This story is page after page of delicious manlove. Hot, sexy, sticky and oh so graphic. I love the dirty boys and Skateboarders is a smorgasbord of young hot bois ready for anything. "

Subtropics:Hustlers, Students, and Juicy Fruits
Wanted: readers who love men. Who REALLY love men. Who love everything about them: their bodies, the way they walk, the words they use when no women are around ... did I mention their bodies?

This book REALLY loves men. Subtitled "Hustlers, Students and Juicy Fruits Heat Up," this collection of short stories by Kenn Dahll will make you hotter than it is in Grenada. Plotlines are thin, usually centering on a buff twenty-something encountering a willing nineteen-year-old lover ... or two ... or three. Often, the tale's teller is Caucasian, and his will-be conquest is Latino.

These tales are set in Florida, after all. Subtropical settings, interracial romance, and barely legal guys are just three of the wide range of fantasies portrayed in these stories. The author flirts with the stock characters of porn (the pizza delivery man, the landscaper, the married man on the downlow, the college jock, et al), but gives them just enough of a twist to make them fresh and interesting again.

The sex scenes are beyond scorching, leaving nothing to the imagination, and earthy as a freshly-tilled field. Slight editing oversights, especially with the punctuation, slow the reader down somewhat, but if you're a reader who loves men (and loves to read about men loving men), you'll barely notice. You'll be too busy looking for oven mitts to hold this smoking volume with.

  • Blood Brothers

So much more than you expect!

As children Andy and Joey were inseparable. Next-door neighbors, best friends and blood brothers, they swore to be friends forever and to watch each other’s backs. But people change. And although they remain friends, Joey’s feelings for Andy start to come between them. Told from Joey’s point of view, you experience his anguish at realizing his attraction for his best friend, his anxiety that someone would find out and finally the acceptance of his sexuality. Blood Brothers turned out to be so much more than the erotic short I first expected. It evokes a broad spectrum of emotions meant to tug at the heartstrings. From expectation… how far will they take it this time, to feelings of empathy for the anguish and destitution Joey feels over his unrequited feelings. Although I found this to be very erotic, it was more about the self-realization and coming of age of a young man in the 50s than about a fleeting romance or sexual adventure.

I was provided a copy of the book by BTS eMag for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review – all conclusions are my own responsibility.
